Atiku Vows to Restore Fuel Subsidy If Elected President in 2027

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to restore Nigeria’s fuel subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Atiku made the declaration during a social media interview while discussing the impact of the subsidy removal by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2023.

He said he did not initially oppose the removal but questioned what had happened to the money expected to be saved from the policy.

Atiku asked whether the savings had been used to improve healthcare, education, security and other areas of national development.

“If I win the presidential election, I will restore the subsidy. And anyone who stole Nigeria’s subsidy funds must return the money,” he said.

The ADC candidate has also challenged the Federal Government to account for revenues and savings generated since the removal of the subsidy, arguing that Nigerians should be able to see how the funds have been utilised.

The subsidy removal has remained one of the most contentious aspects of the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, with the policy contributing to a sharp rise in petrol prices and increased transportation and living costs.

Atiku’s pledge to restore the subsidy is expected to feature prominently in the 2027 presidential campaign, particularly as political parties present competing solutions to the country’s economic hardship.

Campaigning for the 2027 presidential election officially began on August 19, with Atiku among the major opposition figures challenging President Tinubu.
