HORROR IN CROSS RIVER: Suspected Serial Killer Arrested as Security Operatives Discover Multiple Graves in Forest Hideout
The suspect, Akaninyene
Residents of Creektown in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have been thrown into shock following the arrest of a suspected serial killer linked to multiple disappearances and gruesome killings within the community.
The suspect, identified as Akaninyene, was arrested after security operatives reportedly traced him to an isolated hut hidden deep inside a forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community.
According to reports, the operation was carried out by a combined team of Nigerian Army personnel, tactical operatives, community youths, and local leaders following intelligence gathered over the disappearance of a recent victim.
Sources said the suspect attempted to flee after noticing the arrival of security operatives. He allegedly ran into the hut in an attempt to retrieve a weapon before trying to escape into the forest, but was overpowered and arrested.
The situation reportedly took a more disturbing turn after operatives searched the hideout and allegedly discovered several shallow graves concealed beneath planted crops.
Community sources claimed at least eight graves were uncovered, with decomposing bodies allegedly buried inside. Some reports further alleged that several of the bodies recovered were without heads.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect was said to have confessed to multiple killings carried out over an extended period, though authorities are yet to officially confirm the exact number of victims linked to the case.
Reports also alleged that a female accomplice helped lure victims before they were attacked.
The latest incident reportedly occurred earlier this week after residents claimed they heard cries and signs of struggle near the suspect’s hideout, triggering suspicion and eventually leading to the security operation.
The discovery has sparked fear and outrage across the community, with many residents expressing shock that such activities could allegedly take place unnoticed for a long period.
Local leaders, including community officials and youths, were said to have assisted security agencies during the operation and subsequent bush-combing exercises around the area.
Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command has stated that the incident is still being verified.
Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah said authorities are investigating the claims and are expected to provide further official details after preliminary findings are concluded.
The incident has continued to generate widespread reactions across social media, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation and stronger security surveillance in rural communities.
