US House Moves to Suspend Aid To Nigeria Over Christian Killings
The United States House of Representatives has approved a proposal that could suspend American assistance to Nigeria over concerns about the Federal Government's response to the killing of Christians and other religious violence. The measure, passed as part of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Security and State Department Appropriations Bill, would require the US Secretary of State to certify that Nigeria is making measurable progress in protecting vulnerable communities, prosecuting perpetrators, supporting victims, and rebuilding affected communities before assistance can continue. Lawmakers later voted to strengthen the proposal by seeking to withhold 100 percent of US assistance to Nigeria until those conditions are met. The proposal is not yet law.
