ICE Launches Major Crackdown in New York as Trump Escalates Immigration Enforcement

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a fresh wave of immigration raids across New York, with arrests already underway in Queens as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on illegal immigration and sanctuary jurisdictions.

The enforcement operation, which began on Monday, is primarily targeting individuals who had previously been flagged by ICE but were released after local authorities declined to honour federal immigration detainer requests. The operation is expected to expand to Long Island and other parts of New York.

According to reports, the raids are being carried out by ICE personnel already stationed in the New York area, rather than a large deployment of agents from across the country.

The latest operation underscores the growing standoff between President Donald Trump's administration and New York officials over immigration enforcement.

New York is one of several U.S. sanctuary jurisdictions where state and local policies restrict cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Under these policies, local law enforcement agencies generally do not hold individuals solely on ICE detainer requests without additional legal authority, a practice the Trump administration argues allows deportable immigrants to return to the community instead of being transferred into federal custody.

ICE sources said the current operation is focused on locating and arresting those individuals after their release.

The raids are also being conducted under the constraints of New York's Protect Our Courts Act, which prohibits immigration officers from making arrests at or near courthouses, forcing agents to carry out enforcement operations elsewhere.

The renewed enforcement drive is part of President Trump's broader immigration agenda, which prioritises increased deportations, stricter border security and tougher action against illegal immigration. The administration has repeatedly identified sanctuary cities such as New York as key targets, arguing that their policies undermine federal immigration law and public safety.

While the Department of Homeland Security has not issued specific comments on the ongoing operation, it has consistently maintained that ICE will continue enforcing U.S. immigration laws nationwide and does not usually disclose operational details in advance for security reasons.

The latest raids have drawn criticism from immigrant rights advocates and some New York officials, who argue that such operations create fear within immigrant communities and discourage cooperation with local law enforcement. Supporters of the crackdown, however, insist the enforcement actions are necessary to uphold federal immigration laws and remove individuals who have violated them.
