Kogi Court Remands Activist Onimisi Ozigi in Police Custody Over Alleged Cyberstalking of Accountant General

A Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja has ordered the remand of activist and social media commentator Onimisi Farouk Ozigi in police custody pending the hearing of a cyberstalking charge filed against him by the Nigeria Police Force.

The court declined the prosecution's request to remand Ozigi at the Federal Correctional Centre, Koton Karfe, and instead directed that he remain in police custody until the case resumes on Thursday, July 16.

Ozigi is facing a one count charge under Section 436(1)(b) of the Kogi State Penal Code, 2019.

According to the charge, he allegedly published statements on various social media platforms which prosecutors claimed he knew to be false and were directed against the Kogi State Accountant General, Hajia Habibat Onumoko.

The prosecution further alleged that the posts were intended to cause annoyance, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, hatred, ill will and needless anxiety to the Accountant General.

Court documents identified the matter as Charge No. HCL/42C/2026, with the Commissioner of Police listed as the complainant.

Ozigi's arraignment follows his arrest in April after a petition allegedly linked to the Accountant General over his social media posts. The case is expected to continue on Thursday.
