"Leave My Kingdom Now," Och'Otukpo Orders Fulani Herdsmen Out After Fresh Benue Killings

By Opaluwa Oguche | Orion Reports | Abuja | July 12, 2026

The Och'Otukpo, His Royal Highness John Eimonye Odu, has ordered Fulani herdsmen to vacate Otukpo Kingdom with immediate effect following the recent wave of deadly attacks that claimed several lives in parts of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The royal directive comes days after suspected armed herdsmen launched separate attacks on Akpachi Village in Ugboju Community and Otukpo Nobi Community, leaving at least 10 people dead and several others injured.

The attacks triggered widespread outrage, with angry youths carrying the bodies of some victims to the Och'Idoma Palace in protest while demanding urgent action to halt the killings.

Reacting to the deteriorating security situation, the Och'Otukpo directed Fulani herdsmen to leave the kingdom, saying the continued presence of armed herders had become a serious threat to the lives and livelihoods of his people.

The monarch's order is the latest response to the growing insecurity in Benue, where farming communities have repeatedly come under attack amid the lingering farmer herder crisis.

The latest violence is also believed by many residents to be linked to heightened tensions following the June 26 killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku Muhammad, who was murdered after attending a peace meeting. Police have since arrested 17 suspects in connection with the killing.

Residents have continued to call on the Benue State Government and security agencies to reinforce security across Otukpo and neighbouring communities to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among the people.

As of the time of filing this report, neither security authorities nor representatives of Fulani herders had issued an official response to the monarch's directive.
