Atiku Accuses INEC Chairman of Plotting to Weaken Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, of working to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku alleged that the INEC chairman was appointed to create internal crises within opposition parties instead of safeguarding Nigeria's democratic process.

The allegation followed claims by Nafiu Bala Gombe, who identifies himself as the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, that his faction had successfully uploaded the party's candidates to INEC's nomination portal.

Atiku argued that access to the nomination portal can only be granted through official codes issued by INEC and questioned how the Bala Gombe faction allegedly obtained access when the commission had recognised the Senator David Mark led leadership of the ADC.

He warned that granting portal access to a faction not recognised by law would amount to political partisanship and could create avoidable crises within the opposition.

According to Atiku, the alleged action is consistent with what he described as previous attempts by INEC to interfere in the affairs of the ADC.

«"What INEC has done is a recipe for crisis and confirms that Prof. Joash Amupitan was appointed to enable the weakening of opposition parties by creating crisis even where none exists," Atiku said.»

The former Vice President insisted that only candidates submitted by the David Mark led leadership are legally valid, maintaining that the Bala Gombe faction did not conduct recognised party primaries.

He also cited provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, arguing that political parties are permitted to submit only one validly nominated candidate for each elective office.

Atiku called on INEC to refrain from actions capable of creating confusion within opposition parties, accusing the commission of aiding what he described as President Bola Tinubu's agenda of "total state capture."

As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not issued an official response to the allegations.
